Dear Program Directors,

GREAT MUSEUMS: AN ACQUIRING MIND: PHILIPPE DE MONTEBELLO AND THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART (1/60) will feed via APT on February 7, 2010. This one-hour special is presented in High Definition, and is narrated by renowned broadcast journalist and NPR special correspondent, Susan Stamberg.

In true GREAT MUSEUMS style, the program brings viewers a unique and intimate look at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s longest serving director, the world-class museum he served and the legacy of his tenure. Under de Montebello’s leadership, the museum’s Eurocentric collection grew to represent all continents, all cultures, and all eras, enabling the museum to present a panoramic view of the world’s art history over time. During the de Montebello years, The Metropolitan Museum of Art nearly doubled in physical size and many existing galleries were expanded or renovated to accommodate new pieces, including Walter and Lee Annenberg’s complete collection of 19th- and 20th-century art.

GREAT MUSEUMS takes viewers behind the scenes at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, where museum curators meet to propose and defend the acquisition of new works of art in their respective areas, and conservators combine artistry and state of the art technology to meticulously restore precious tapestries, drawings, stained glass and even a dramatic 20th-century gold lamé evening gown by Paul Poiret.

The program also follows the museum’s curatorial and exhibit design staff as they stage a special exhibit featuring 300 of the 84,000 masterpieces acquired under de Montebello’s guidance during his 31-year tenure. Mounted in 2008, the curators’ salute to de Montebello included masterworks from every corner of the globe.

GREAT MUSEUMS brings the highest production values to this story of Philippe de Montebello and his quest to present a panoramic view of the world’s art history over time. For more information contact De Shields Associates, Inc. at 301-388-2492, or robyn@deshieldsassociates.com.

Dear Public Television Colleague,

GREAT MUSEUMS® returns in Fall 2008 with two exciting and unique one-hour specials presented in High Definition. Spend time at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. with some of the coolest zookeepers in the business as they care for and protect endangered animal species. Then later this fall, journey to a living time capsule in Havana, Cuba where residents live, work and play amid an old world setting dating back to the 1500s when Spain ruled the island.

THE SMITHSONIAN NATIONAL ZOO: WILD THING (1x60), feeding October 5, 2008, is a window to the animal kingdoms of the world, showcasing the global leadership role of our nation's zoo in preserving endangered species. It's a living museum where golden lion tamarins swing on ropes high in the sky and cheetahs sprint throughout an exhibit resembling the African savannah. Behind the scenes is the dedicated staff that employs state of the art technology to breed animals in captivity and carefully reintroduce them to their natural habitat. The scientists, curators, animal keepers, veterinarians and volunteers are at the heart of the National Zoo's mighty mission: the preservation of life on earth.

GREAT MUSEUMS OF HAVANA: CURIOUS ABOUT CUBA (1x60), feeding November 30, 2008, takes us to Havana, the capital city of Cuba - a place unfamiliar to many viewers in the U.S. The island is home to museums dedicated to the many facets of Cuba's 500-year history- fine arts, cars, cigars, rum and revolution. Outside these museum walls are stunning public works projects focusing on cultural preservation and the restoration of Old Havana City's ancient public streets, squares, and majestic architectural structures. This living history is now being meticulously restored and transformed into apartments, schools, cafes and markets for its citizens.

GM SEASON 4

January 10, 2006

Dear Public Television Colleague,

Great News for 2006 America’s Year of the Museum, GREAT MUSEUMS® is releasing
Seasons I-III. The 30x30 re-mastered episodes are feeding NOW -- as of January 7, 2006 -- with a special Year of the Museum message, followed by a :30 VOCA opportunity:

“2006 is America’s Year of the Museum, celebrating the many ways that museums connect us to the great history and mystery of life and civilization.
America’s Great Museums – their stories are our stories!”

Also in celebration of the Year of the Museum GREAT MUSEUMS® will present three new one-hour specials for primetime – Riches, Rivals and Radicals: 100 Years of Museums in America and The Museum of Modern Art: In Our Time (New York) both to be released in May in celebration of National Museum Month; and the National Baseball Hall of Fame: Home Base (Cooperstown) to be released in October for the World Series. The three one-hour specials will also be fed as 6x30s. In addition, Season IV will also include half-hour programs on the Boston Children’s Museum (Boston, MA) and the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, MN).

Our Year of the Museum partner, the American Association of Museums (AAM) has already advised its 3100 member institutions – from art, history, science, military and maritime, and youth museums, to aquariums, zoos, botanical gardens, arboretums, historic sites, and science and technology centers -- to work with their local public television stations on cross promotional events and activities to mark the Year of the Museum. You can also link to GreatMuseums.org, which connects your viewers to all the museums in your state, city by city.

What better way for you to celebrate the Year of the Museum than by using GREAT MUSEUMS® as a weekly series and using the :30 VOCA opportunity to tie each broadcast into museum or cultural opportunities in your community. Weekly scheduling of the 30x30 episodes will build a cumulative audience leading into the release of the two original Year of the Museum 1-hour primetime specials feeding during National Museum Month, in May 2006. The Year of the Museum is a great opportunity for local underwriting. Also provided are :30 on-air promos for each episode, plus 3 generic promos.

If you have any questions, please contact De Shields Associates at (301) 388-2492 or via email at robyn@deshieldsassociates.com. We look forward to being part of your 2006 Year of the Museum celebration!
